South Kona Studio, 2 min from beach

Carissa Rd North, 96704 Captain Cook

Description

Private, quiet, ocean-view studio apartment downstairs of a single family home in quiet rural subdivision. Private entrance via side staircase. Two minutes to secluded pebble beach with easy access to outstanding snorkeling. Clean, simple, comfortable room with picnic table, your own private patio. Separate and lockable from the main house.

This is a very unique area. The dramatic, steep slopes of Mauna Loa in South Kona create commanding, 180-degree panoramic views, affording us clear views all the way to Kailua town, 25 miles to the north and to Milol‘'i, 15 miles to the south. Clear horizon lines are 35 miles straight out to sea. We can see (and hear) the raucous humpback whales from here nearly every night in the winter season, (November through April). Cool elevation of about 750 feet..Ocean breezes keep us naturally comfortable. This is a setting quite off the beaten track so if you are looking to walk to nightlife or Starbux, this is not the place. If you want to see stars and whales and hear the surf, that's more like us. It's not the Mauna Lani but we have other charms here. :)

The beach below is a pebbled cove with protected bay. Snorkeling along the finger reefs here is EXCELLENT. Our beach is a TRUE best-kept secret. Shore divers love this area, also known for its great diving. (The Kona Aggressor dive charter parks just to the north of our bay.) In the winter we do often receive raucous northwest swells, so sometimes the beach is not safe for swimming in winter. (But when this happens, usually ALL Kona leeward beaches experience dangerous conditions.) The beach is about two minutes away via a crazy steep road. You can walk it-- but driving is recommended.

We are coqui-frog free, which means you will NOT hear the night calls of these shrieking pests that have invaded much of the island, especially in rural locations.

Rental includes basic cookware, dishes, glasses, kitchen utensils, toaster, microwave, rice cooker/steamer, coffeemaker, teapot, free advice ;-) and linens. Free use of snorkeling equipment, beach cooler & chairs, boogie board, beach towels and beachmats. The surfboard is available for a nominal rental fee. Free Wi-Fi. Furniture includes queen size bed, end table, chair and lamp, dropleaf bar table and barstool set, luggage shelf, two armoires for storage. Folding card table and two chairs. New 19-inch flat screen/DVD player with a few movies. :)

Enjoy spectacular sunsets in the evenings, amidst the sounds of thousands of roosting mynah birds, (depending on the time of year.)

Your hosts in the main house are friendly, longtime Hawaii Island residents with a Maltese dog.
Apartment sleeps two (2) guests max. We have solar hot water and rainwater catchment here. No tobacco smoking on the property (or smoking of any kind inside.) The site won't let me change the charge per additional guest number, but I can't take more than two. If the guests wish to sleep separately, there is a foldout futon and extra bedding provided.

My place is great for a single or couple who want a nicely located spot near the beach but seek a quiet retreat well away from the bustle of Kailua town.

Winter rates (November through April) are higher. One week minimum at Christmas week. I do not have monthly rates. There is a $100 cleaning fee and $160 refundable security deposit required. I must collect this from you before arrival. In addition, Hawaii Tax of 13.45% applies to total.

Please ask if you have questions. :)

Absolutely no smoking, inside or out, is allowed.

I can often take you last minute, so please enquire.

We are coqui-frog free, which means you will NOT hear the night calls of these shrieking pests that have invaded much of the island, especially in rural locations. At the moment, I have no neighbors on either side of us, so it is fairly dead quiet at night. What you might hear at night: Whales. And surf. That's about it. :)

Rental includes basic cookware, dishes, glasses, kitchen utensils, toaster, microwave, rice cooker/steamer, coffeemaker, teapot, free advice ;-) and linens. The gas BBQ is a bit on the aged side but it works. Free use of snorkeling equipment, beach cooler & chairs, boogie board, beach towels and beachmats. Furniture includes queen size bed, end table, chair and lamp, dropleaf bar table and barstool set, luggage shelf, two armoires for storage. Folding card table and two chairs. Your hosts in the main house are friendly, longtime Hawaii Island residents with a Maltese dog. Subdivision is approx. 22 miles south of Kailua-Kona. Good central home base location to tour the island. 15 minutes from Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park and "Two-Step," 10 minutes to Ho'okena Beach. About an hour and 15 from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. About an hour south of Keahole Airport. Half hour to Captain Cook, the nearest town with services such as gasoline, grocery and banking. There is a county bus that services the island, heading both north and south; they stop right at the top of our hill a couple of times a day. But please note... having a car for mobility's and convenience sake is DEFINITELY recommended. ( In other words, you really MUST have a car.) I also recommend making an advanced car rental booking; don't take a chance! Kona can sometimes become sold out of rental cars during the busy seasons.
